Overall, the semiconductor market is down for 2012.

The leading companies continue to fund expansion primarily through acquisitions rather than internal organic developments.

Semiconductor sales are showing a greater growth in the Asian markets, associated with the continuing trend of manufacturers utilizing lower cost production facilities in that regions.

Based on global revenues across all product lines, the top semiconductor suppliers for 2012 are:

Intel Corp

Samsung Electronics

Texas Instruments Inc

Qualcomm

Toshiba Corp

SK Hynix Inc

ST Microelectronics

Renesas Electronics Corp

Micron Technology

Broadcom

AMD

Infineon Technologies

Freescale

Year over year sales for this group are down, with some companies recording double-digit declines.

European IC suppliers were particularly hard hit, including Infineon and STMicroelectronics, showing revenue declines in the 12% to 17% range.

While Intel continues to dominate the market, TI is competing with Samsung for second place. Following the National Semiconductor Corp. (NSC) acquisition by TI earlier this year, TI has solidified its place as the leading seller of power management ICs.

Intel’s server and motherboard markets were augmented by the purchase of the InfiniBand Business unit from Qlogic. This follows on their acquisition in 2011 of Fulcrum Microsystems (Calabasas, CA) for their Ethernet switch technology.

In the memory eco-system, Micron Technology announced it will buy bankrupt Japanese memory manufacturer Elpida Memory for $754 million in cash and $1.75 billion. The Elpida deal will provide Micron a larger stake into the DRAM business, and a possibility of overtaking the number one flash memory company Samsung.
