Does $38 get you much of a tablet? Via Acumor

Low Cost $38 Tablet
Low Cost $38 Tablet

Remember when tablets that were priced under $100 were a big deal? Now tablet makers are selling their products at prices much lower. The big question, though, is if these budget-priced tablets are worth the money. Time Magazine recently looked at this question, evaluating the new Ubislate 7Ci tablet from Datawind. What’s remarkable about this tablet? It only costs $38.

Race to the bottom?

Tablet makers are already involved in a protracted price war. The goal? To tap into the cash of the country’s more budget-minded customers. The economy may be improving across the country. But it’s not improving very quickly. And lots of shoppers are still looking at tight budgets at home. Business owners, too, want to save money when considering tech purchases.

But what about performance? Time shares that the Datawind tablet doesn’t really shine here. Time writes that the tablet boasts the same kind of tech specs that smartphones offered a few years ago. The tablet is bogged down by bad viewing angles, short battery life and a poor performance. The tablet only has 4 GB of storage, meaning that you won’t have much room for storing apps.

Even cheaper?

Of course, that $38 price tag is impressive. Time admitted that much in its review. And if you are budget-savvy consumer or business owner, Datawind’s move is good news for you. This tablet may not be the right one for you. But the existence of the Ubislate 7Ci does prove one thing: Budget tablets are only going to get more affordable. You don’t need to pay a small fortune to purchase a tablet any more.
