HEVC To Replace MPEG-4 For Next Generation Video Codec

HEVCThe video standards organization is in the process of finalizing the new specifications for the upcoming video codec. It is expected they’ll have the release version in early 2013. HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), referenced as H.265 should have an average 30 to 40 percent efficiency increase over the current protocol.

Depending on the implementation and application, it’s possible to derive up to 67 percent boost in performance.

Chip manufacturers and ASIC suppliers should have silicon and cores available in first half of 2013 for their early adopter partners. The embedded base for existing MPEG-4 (Moving Picture Experts Group), also referred to H.264, will be around for the next few years as the transition takes place.
