Facebook Data Center
Facebook Data Center

Business Insider just recently ran an interesting look at the way the Internet really works. It’s a fascinating story because so many of us have become dependent on the online world in such a short period of time. Most people don’t really know how this enormous communications and data tool actually works. Business Insider, though, found several interesting facts about what actually goes on online. According to the story, 27 percent of U.S. consumers use their smartphones and the mobile Internet to shop. Seven percent of U.S. consumers have purchased merchandise from online auction websites. U.S. residents aren’t shy about banking through the Internet, either. According to Business Insider, 33 percent of U.S. residents use their mobile phones and Internet for mobile banking. Here are some more of the most fascinating:

Facebook is King

First, take a deeper look at Facebook. You know it is an incredibly useful site for keeping up with your friends and family. But did you know, too, that Facebook is the dominant player when it comes to online traffic? According to the Business Insider story, and data from Hitwise, Facebook accounts for about one in every five Website views. That’s impressive. So is the number of members that Facebook reached this past year: As reported by Business Insider, the social media site now boasts in excess of 1 billion users.

The Biggest Data Center is Rising in Utah

Do you know the location where largest data center is located? Soon, it’s going to be Utah. According to Business Insider, the National Security Agency is currently in the process of building a massive data center in the state. Once the center is ready for operation, it will store an amazing yottabyte of data. Like most people, you probably have no clue just what a yottabyte is. But the name is certainly impressive. And know this: A yottabyte of data represents a totally massive amount of data. A yottabyte is the same as 1,000 zettabytes or 1 million exabytes.

Streaming is on the Rise

Business Insider cited Harris Interactive numbers demonstrating that greater than 50 percent of U.S. residents use the Internet to watch TV. This is done through streaming video, and the service is becoming especially popular among people under the age of 35. Harris Interactive found that streaming TV shows from the Internet — and watching them on smartphones, tablets and other devices — has become the preferred technique for U.S. residents under 35 to watch TV.
