Tadiran Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery For Wireless Sensor Networks [VIDEO]

Lithium-Ion battery cells are highly suitable for usage in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which require long deployment life and operation in harsh environments. Tadiran Batteries has recently announced their new family of rechargeable Lithium-Ion cells, developed for use in severe conditions.
The “TLI Series” can be recharged using standard energy harvesting techniques to extend the usable life cycle of a wireless communications node for up to 25 years. They are designed to be recharged using DC power sources including photovoltaic, acoustic, vibration and others. Tadiran Batteries has field-tested and employed enhanced life-cycle acceleration testing in millions of cells to ensure the 25 year service life.

Wireless Sensor Networks rely on communications from the sensor nodes to the hubs and gateways, through to a central site. Many, if not all, of this is two-way communication which can consume significant amounts of power. The Tadiran TLI series of batteries feature a patented hybrid layer capacitor (HLC) to store the energy needed for bursts of two-way communications.
NortekUSA has developed a number of ocean current and wave measurement systems which use Tadiran battery packs. The video below shows the “Aquadopp” acoustic wave current profiler and the “AWAC” used for current profiler, wave measurements and ice profiler. These use the Tadiran PulsesPlus™ battery packs.
In addition to Wireless Sensor Networks, the Tadiran batteries are preferred for other applications such as:
- Smart Meters
- Military
- Aerospace
- Remote Monitoring
- RFID Applications
- Data Logging
- Wireless Sensor Networks
- Oceanographic Measurement
- Remote Tracking
- Medicine
- High Temperature Environments
Features of the TLI series include:
- Extended operating Temperature (-40°C to 85°C, with storage up to 90°C)
- Extreme temperature charging capability (10 hour rate)
- Ability to deliver high current pulses (maximum of 5A)
- Low annual self-discharge rate (less than 5%)
- Extended recharge life cycles (5,000 full cycles)
In addition to the TLI series of Lithium-Ion batteries, Tadiran also offers a full line of Lithium Thionyl Chloride cells. Both the Lithium-Ion and Lithium Thionyl Chloride cells are lead-free, ROHS and WEEE compliant. These are available in several standard AA-sizes (1550, 1530 and 1520) in addition to custom battery pack configurations.
For extremely long life requirements, Tadiran has the “LiSOCL2” family of batteries. The LiSOCL2 features the lowest annual self-discharge rate at less than 1% per year, enabling these batteries to operate over 40 years depending on device operating usage.
