The Growing Number Of Mobile Devices In Workplace Making Life Hard For IT Pros Via Acumor

Managing Bring Your Own Devices
Managing Bring Your Own Devices

Do you let your employees work on their own laptops, tablets or smartphones in the office? Do you allow them to connect these devices to your company’s network?

This might make your workers happy and more productive. After all, your employees are more familiar with their home devices than they are with your office computers and laptops.

But the bring-your-own-device movement might be causing problems with IT workers at your business. As BizTech writer Ricky Ribeiro says in a recent feature: The growing number of mobile devices in the workplace are placing a strain on IT departments.

The numbers

Ribeiro’s story cites numbers from the most recent Mobility at Work report from CDW, a survey of 1,200 IT professionals. According to the survey, 92 percent of IT workers report that they have encountered challenges with personal devices in the workplace.

The problems

Not surprisingly, security issues were the most common problem. The survey found that 55 percent of IT pros said that device data security is a big concern of the bring-your-own-device movement. A total of 39 percent of IT pros said that increased network latency — the delay in how long it takes data to move from one point to another — is another common problem when too many workers connect their mobile devices to a company’s network.

Lack of support

Ribeiro writes that technology problems are only part of the hurdles facing IT workers in the age of mobile devices. The survey also found that companies are not providing adequate support to employees who are using their own devices in the office. According to the survey, 56 percent of users give IT a grade of “C” or worse when it comes to personal device support. Only 18 percent of IT workers gave their own bring-your-own-device policies and support an “A”.
