Where to Find America’s Largest Airports

Airports are one of the most fascinating buildings in any city.  These businesses function almost like portals, whisking you away to another country or city by allowing you to step into an airplane.

If you’re curious about where to find the largest airports out there, America has to offer these are the most fantastic ones.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport

In Michigan’s largest city, Detroit Metropolitan Airport covers 20 square kilometers, with six runways and two terminals.  Although it was originally constructed in 1929 on a tenth of that land, it’s quickly grown to accommodate more flights and passengers.

Within the last couple of years, this airport has seen 34 million people per year: but that number is quickly growing.  Current predictions by the US Federal Aviation Administration say that this number will grow to 60 million within the next twenty years.

Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport

Dallas is a hot destination, so its airport has made a name for itself as the 12th busiest globally, serving over 67 million passengers in 2017.  This airport was built to accommodate 260 gates, although it currently only needs 165, with the vision of expansion and growth in the future.

Although this airport is massive and sprawling, you can take the 7.74 km Skylink trail through the airport to avoid missing your flight or getting to the wrong location.  This is a great airport to get where you need to go, especially if you live in one of the nearby Dallas apartments.

John F Kennedy International Airport

This airport may be the most famous area to fly in and out of!  At home in the eastern borough of Queens, this is the largest airport in New York and handles over fifty-nine million passengers a year, making it the 27th busiest airport globally.

In 2018, Governor Cuomo announced that this airport would be getting expanded and upgraded, a project that will cost around $13,000,000,000 and will take approximately five years to complete.

O’Hare International Airport

O’Hare International Airport is Chicago’s pride and joy.  The busiest airport on this list, and the sixth most active globally, handles over 80 million passengers a year and is expected to grow by 60% within the next few years.

The terminals are well spread out, so passengers don’t feel cramped, but a subway system will take you to and from your gates.  An expansion is expected to start within the next couple of years to double the number of flights this airport can take.

Salt Lake City International Airport

Salt Lake City International Airport is just four miles west of its namesake city and is one of the busiest airports in the world.  It carries over 24 million passengers a year and works to get as many people where they need to be as quickly as possible.

In the center of the airport is a fantastic food and dining area, with treats that will help ease the stress of having to fly.
