Don’t let the polar vortex keep you indoors this winter. Light-weight, battery powered heated jackets are the hot ticket for staying warm when the cold front moves in.

The newest entrant into battery-heated jackets is the successful Kickstarter company Ravean . Starting with a down jacket, they have added power panels for wired warmth where it’s typically most needed: the upper back, chest and front pockets. Additional wiring is sewn into the arms, extending down each sleeve, to a small plug on the cuff to attach option heated gloves. For serious outdoor activity, this will keep you warm.

The Ravean jacket system uses a proprietary 12-volt Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery to power the heating elements. A 90 minute charge will get you nearly 10 hours at the lowest heat setting, or just over an hour when set to maximum. Of course, even after the battery heat runs down, you still have a decent weight down jacket to keep you warm.

The big three (Bosch, Dewalt and Makita) in battery operated power tools are also big players in the heated clothing market. Each has in-house design teams to make stylish, yet functional battery heated jackets for the winter market. One of the key features for these jackets is that if you already have the power tools, you can use the same batteries and chargers.

These jackets are typically water-resistant, soft-fleece rather than down fill coats and more suitable for an outdoor work site, commuting to work or some extra warmth. The battery charge will last up to 7 hours on the low setting and about an hour on the highest. All of them have built-in USB ports to keep your phone charged.
