WISPA Petitions FCC on ISM Regulations

The Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA), a membership organization that promotes the development, advancement, and unity of the fixed wireless Internet service provider (WISP) industry, is pleased that the efforts of the fixed wireless industry has resulted in a deferral of rules that would require equipment manufacturers to certify new 5 GHz unlicensed equipment under more stringent technical requirements.

Last year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted new rules that sunset the ability of equipment manufacturers to certify equipment under rules that would limit the ability of devices to transmit long distances. The rule, which was scheduled to go into effect today, would have increased the cost and reduced performance of broadband devices. As equipment is replaced, only lesser-performing equipment certified under new rules would be able to be installed.

WISPA and others asked the FCC to waive the equipment certification rule so that the FCC would have a fair opportunity to consider proposed remedies that would be less onerous than the rule adopted by the FCC. The FCC’s adoption of an extension until December 2, 2015 will enable industry and the FCC to continue to work together in achieving a permanent solution.

“The extension will give much needed time for WISPA’s and equipment manufacturers to properly implement and negotiate changes that will have less impact on existing customers and service to rural areas throughout the country,” said Alex Phillips, Vice President and FCC Committee Chair of WISPA. “WISPA is pleased that the FCC heard our concerns and is willing to work with our industry.”
